Abstract:
The ternary alloy system tantalum-hafnium-nitrogen was investigated by means of melting point, X-ray, differential thermal analytical, and metallographic techniques. Also investigated were the two binary systems of tantalum-nitrogen and hafnium-nitrogen. In the ternary system, seven isothermal reactions occur Three, Class II-type four-phase reactions and four limiting tie line reactions are observed. The observed phase relationships established during the course of this investigation are discussed, and isothermal sections from 1000C to 3200C as well as an isometric view of the ternary system are presented. In addition to the ternary system, phase diagrams for the two binary systems of tantalum-nitrogen and hafnium-nitrogen are also presented. Author
