Abstract:
Corneal endothelium from young albino rabbits was grown in tissue culture in the presence of supraphysiologic concentrations of hydrocortisone. Examination of the cultured cells by light- and electron microscopy disclosed abnormalities in mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, cytoplasmic granules, and nuclear chromatin. Although hydrocortisone impaired outgrowth, a given number of corneal endothelial cells grown in the presence of hydrocortisone covered more surface area on the growth substrate than did an equal number of control cells.
