Abstract:

The dominant parameter for turbulent jets and wall jets is the jet momentum or the excess jet momentum when the surrounding fluid is moving. In many instances this parameter tends to remain constant and dimensional analysis in terms of it often collapses experimental results onto a single curve. The entrainment of surrounding fluid accounts for the reattachment of jets to nearby surfaces, and for the eventual separation of jets from convex walls. A wall jet entrains less than a free jet but convex curvature can redress the balance. The concommittant inflow into jets can be satisfactorily simulated by means of sinks to obtain the gross effect on the surrounding irrotational flow. Author
