THE EXAMINATION OF ETCHED NIOBIUM AND NIOBIUM ALLOYS IN POLARIZED LIGHT.
Mechanical engineering rept.,
NATIONAL AERONAUTICAL ESTABLISHMENT OTTAWA (ONTARIO)
Pagination or Media Count:
Although optically isotropic, niobium and the niobium alloys B66 and FS85 can be made to respond to polarized light by a suitable etching treatment. The etching technique and possible uses of the ensuing activity in polarized light are described. New evidence that the activity of such isotropic metals is due to the surface topography is presented. The surface structure and its crystallographic relation are discussed with particular reference to similar observations on fcc metals. Author
