The functional integral representing the grand canonical partition function of the Kac, Uhlenbeck and Hemmer model is approximated, in a systematic way, to give a much simpler functional integral representing one dimensional Brownian motion with absorption. It is shown that an integration over paths which represent the particle switching any number of times through the absorption-barrier leads to the phase transition of Kac, Uhlenbeck and Hemmer. Author
