The activities of the Toxic Hazards Research Unit THRU are reviewed in this report. The experimental research program was conducted concurrently with construction activities for additional facilities. The construction activities did not stop the research program but required cooperative scheduling of both activities to permit installation of utilities without interruption of experimentation. At scheduled periods, experiments were suspended to permit major corrective and preventive maintenance programs on both the ambient and altitude laboratory facilities. The Apollo materials toxicity screening tests have continued with no further evidence of toxicity exhibited by their gas-off products. A repeat eight-month study of the effects of a mixed gas oxygen- nitrogen atmosphere at 5 psia was completed with the only confirmed adverse effect being the depressed growth of albino rats. Experiments conducted in the ambient facility included studies on the effects of ethylene glycol vapor on rodents, studies on emergency exposure limits for monomethylhydrazine MMH and nitrogen trifluoride NF3, and preliminary acute toxicity experiments on oxygen difluoride OF2 and chlorine trifluoride CIF3.
