Abstract:

Since Ambassador Arvid Pardo of Malta drew the attention of the General Assembly to the problems of the seabed in 1967, the adequacy of the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Continental Shelf--especially its delimitation--has been a subject of discussion. Discussion has proceeded from the First Committee of the 22nd Assembly through an Ad Hoc Committee on the Seabeds, a Permanent Committee on the Seabeds to the recently concluded discussions of the 24th Assembly. Although the debate has been far ranging, the critical shortrun problem which must be solved is the delimitation of the outer edge of the Continental Shelf. Author
