The parenchymal cells of the human liver taken by needle biopsy in 10 cases of serum hepatitis were studied in the electron microscope to make clear the fine structure and cytochemical components of giant mitochondria appearing in the parenchymal cell cytoplasm, and to discuss their functional significance. The clusters of dotted elements 100 to 200 A in diameter and parallel-arranged filamentous elements 70 to 140 A in diameter appearing in the homogeneously dense matrix of mitochondria were extracted by functions of both DNase and RNase, but dense granules 150 to 850 A in diameter within the mitochondrial matrix were easily extracted only by RNase. These peculiar elements in the mitochondria seem to have been synthesized in the mitochondria. It was suggested that the dotted elements might be precursor of viral particles. Author
