In modelling a natural system for computer simulation one must often reduce the complexity of the system in accord with practical considerations of computer size and length of computation time. In a model of a living cell, the formal concepts of systems theory valuable were found in this regard. In particular, the notion of homomorphism is applicable to the problem of assuring that the model preserves interesting properties of the system under study while at the same time being simpler with respect to computer implementation.
