The total receipt of radiant solar energy at the earths surface is dependent upon the clarity of the atmospheric envelope and the number of sunshine hours. For short-wave solar radiation, water vapor and clouds are the two major absorbers and scatterers. The graphs of solar radiation and the average number of sunshine hours shown in this report indicate that the stations in the Southwest United States have the most favorable climatic conditions for the location of a solar furnace that will provide thermal radiation of high intensity throughout the year. On a climatological basis the arid Southwest appears to be the logical site for the solar furnace.
