The near and far depths of field of an optical system are related to the performance to be expected from an imaging system. The near and far ranges beyond which depth of field imposes an unacceptable degradation in imagery are plotted as a function of the ratio of the diameter of the circle of confusion to the diameter of the aperture. Hyperfocal distance is plotted as a function of resolution in line pairs per millimeter with f-number as a parameter. A hyperfocal distance criterion for acceptability of a fixed focal length system is derived as a function of near and far field ranges of interest. Author
