THE SPECTRA OF DOUBLY AND TRIPLY IONIZED RARE EARTHS.

The parametric description of energy levels of rare earth ions was extended to include operators not previously taken into account. For fN-shell configurations these include the magnetic corrections spin-other-orbit and spin-spin derived from the relativistic Breit operator, as well as new effective operators describing configuration-mixing shifts induced by a mixture of electrostatic and spin-orbit perturbations. In the wavelength region 1200-3000A the experimental spectra were measured and partially analyzed for PrIV, NdIII and IV, SmIII, GdIV, DyIV, ErIII and IV, and TmIII and IV. An extensive computer tape library was prepared which includes all fN and fNd configurations of immediate interest. With these and the present knowledge of atomic structure parameters, it is now possible to anticipate the energy level structure of these configurations to better than 100cm. The calculations also include relative transition probabilities in intermediate coupling and hence give a very good estimate of the location of the stronger lines.
