Abstract:

Several different experimental techniques flame-ion mass spectrometry microwave cavity resonance, electrostatic probes and absorption spectrophotometry were applied to fuel-rich atmospheric-pressure H2O2N2 flames seeded with potassium in order to determine the thermochemistry of ions produced from additives containing tungsten, boron or tin. Addition of tungsten results in reductions in concentrations of free potassium atoms and in formation of stable W-containing negative ions. The derived enthalpy changes imply electron affinities for WO3 and HWO4 of approximately 305 and 400 kjmole, respectively. The reaction K H2WO4 KHWO4 H is found to be exothermic. Comparison of the apparently rapidly established dissociative electron attachments to HBO2 and HCl provides a value for the electron affinity of BO2. Reactions leading to formation of BO- are discussed, and a lower limit for the electron affinity of BO of approximately 240 kjmole is obtained. An examination of the positive ions produced by addition of tin compounds to these flames leads to a zero-point standard heat of formation for SnOHg. Author
