One of the very important research and development efforts of the United States Government in recent years has been concerned with the detection, location, and identification of underground nuclear explosions. One of the major experiments in this program was Project LONG SHOT in which an underground nuclear explosion was detonated on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians. Volume II presents a comprehensive analysis of the LONG SHOT explosion including both near-source and far-field observations. Included are discussions of the physical setting of LONG SHOT, near-source behavior, and location and magnitude estimates. The principal identification criteria are applied to LONG SHOT in an effort to assess the effectiveness of each diagnostic for this source region. In addition LONG SHOT is compared directly with equivalent magnitude earthquakes from the same region to elucidate their differences and similarities.
