An analytical technique was developed to derive criteria for selecting features to be portrayed on aeronautical charts. The technique was tested for validity and practical utility by producing an experimental chart based on the derived criteria. The experimental chart was objectively evaluated and compared with standard aeronautical charts in orientation tests conducted in a low-altitude flight simulator. A total of 112 test sorties were flown. It appears that the analytical technique for deriving cartographic selection criteria is valid for use in general cartographic practice. Author
