Abstract:
Experiment design is considered in a framework which integrates mathematical and statistical techniques with the disciplinary background of the problem under study. Considered as a mapping from treatment space to response space, experimentation is viewed as a problem in mathematical extension of a function as well as a problem in statistical estimation. It is shown that existing experiment designs, born in the classical framework of polynomial approximation to a function, are not necessarily optimum when the experiment is viewed in the context of a general function space. A philosophy for broadening the scope of experiment design from this point of view is outlined and some techniques for its implementation are presented. Author
