Abstract:
The paper is intended to assess the state of understanding of residential segregation. It deals mainly with the housing situation of black Americans, but alludes to other groups as well. It begins by asking why segregation is an important topic and then discusses the current magnitude of segregation in American cities, pointing out some recent trends. A survey of theoretical, empirical, and policy issues follows. In the course of the survey, the rudiments of a new model of housing segregation are presented. Author
