When spatial disorder is present in solids the selection rules for first order Raman scattering breakdown and all vibrational modes are active. Thus, Raman spectra can reveal the phonon density of states in a disordered solid. Raman scattering data are reported for fused silica glass which confirm this. The data are in good agreement with Deans theoretical calculation of the density of vibrational states. Author
