Abstract:

The physics of strong shock waves propagating in gases are studied. Fluid dynamical aspects are concisely summarized with particular emphasis given to the properties of very strong shock waves. Ionizing shocks, shocks in plasmas, and collisionless shock waves are discussed. Radiative shock waves are described within the framework of the equations of radiative gas dynamics, and relativistic shock waves with radiation are analyzed. The structure of a thermonuclear detonation wave is described and recent laboratory results obtained in experiments with high speed shock waves are summarized. Author
