Studies were conducted to determine whether single 4-gram doses of sulfanilamide, sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole and sulfapyrazine affect performance at simulated altitudes of 18,000 feet either with or without added oxygen. Conclusions and recommendations were a Intellectual and psychomotor performance at 18,000 feet simulated altitude, both with and without supplemental oxygen, is adversely affected by single 4-gram doses of sulfanilamide taken approximately 4 to 6 hours before testing. b Under similar conditions 4-gram doses of sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole or sulfapyrazine are without measurable detrimental effect. c It is recommended that this demonstrated effect of comparatively small doses of sulfanilamide be considered in the use of this drug, both locally and systemically, in flying personnel.
