Abstract:
The apparatus and procedure are described for sampling molten steel during vacuum degassing, consisting essentially of a quartz tube sampler which can be immersed into molten steel, taking a sample, and withdrawing it without breaking the vacuum. Before sampling a piece of A1 wire is placed into the tube to react with the oxides. Samples can be taken at a rate of one every 30 sec. The samples are cooled and placed into calibrated eudiometers filled with alc. after 5 days, the amt. of evolved H is measured and the amt. of residual H is detd. by vacuum heating. Essentially, the method det. gas content remaining in the metal rather than the gas evolved it can be used for detg. other gases or for complete chemical analysis.
