Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to study both the stress intensity and the energy criteria of elastic fractures in order to incorporate the couple-stress effect which is induced by high stress gradient. The high stress gradient will be present whenever there is discontinuity in material geometry or constitution. Initial effort was conducted on a systematic reviewing and evaluation of the couple-stress theory of elasticity and the elastic theory of fracture mechanics.
