Abstract:

This report describes a continuation of the work reported in a UTIAS Technical Note by A. C. Campbell and B. Etkin titled The Response of Cylindrical Structure to a Turbulent Flow Field at Subcritical Reynolds Number. Their model, suitably modified, was used for the present analysis. The response of the base bending moment of a slender, vertically-mounted cantilever cylinder to a turbulent flow field with shear was measured for the drag streamwise and lift directions, and the drag response was compared to the response calculated for the same flow field by a linear theory. This theory makes use of the method of normal modes, and includes only the effect of random turbulence in the generalized force function. The turbulent field was determined by measurement of the requisite space-time correlations. Agreement between the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements was found to be quite good, especially at lower frequencies. Author
