Abstract:
A simple model which simulates nongray behavior of real gases is investigated numerically. Equilibrium and nonequilibrium radiative fields are computed both with multi-step spectra and corresponding approximate absorption coefficients. The several hundred cases computed reveal that the approximate method is quite acceptable. The method is applied to the characteristics calculation of the radiation coupled flow field generated by a piston inserted into a quiescent gas. Comparison of two nongray models confirms that the flow field is insensitive to the detailed nongrayness of the gas. It is observed that in nongray gases the inclusion of upstream absorption may lead to hotter but thinner shock layers than computations performed without upstream absorption. Author
