Abstract:
Reduced performance and sometimes complete failure of internal combustion engines can be, at times, attributed to contamination of crankcase oil by the presence of glycol antifreeze. In the course of testing used crankcase oils, it is advantageous to be able to detect the presence of glycol and determine its concentration. This report describes a rapid new analytical procedure for the determination of ethylene glycol in crankcase oil using programmed temperature gas chromatography. The procedure involves the conversion of ethylene glycol to its trimethylsilyl derivative prior to chromatographing identification and determination is obtained from the time incident and magnitude of the ethylene glycol peak appearing on the chromatogram.
