Abstract:
Spectroscopic measurements of electron and ion temperatures in steady-state helium and argon plasmas are reported. Electron temperatures were determined on the basis of coronal equilibrium from measured ratios of the intensities of spectral lines emitted by ions in different stages of ionization. Measurement of the doppler-broadened widths of spectral lines by means of a pressure swept Fabry-Perot interferometer were used to obtain ion temperature values. Evidence is presented to indicate that the populations of excited states of neutral helium are governed by an influx of background neutral particles. It is also shown that excited-state populations of singly-ionized argon obey coronal equilibrium. Author
