Solutions of stannous fluoride, solutions of stannous hexafluorozirconate, and solutions of stannous fluoride plus zirconium fluoride were compared as to their ability to reduce enamel solubility. All solutions were so prepared as to contain tin in amounts equal to solutions having 10, 0.5, and 0.1 stannous fluoride. Solutions of stannous hexafluorozirconate were significantly more effective than those of stannous fluoride containing equivalent tin. The performance of these stannous hexafluorozirconate solutions was not, however, different from that of solutions prepared by separate additions of identical amounts of stannous fluoride and zirconium fluoride. Thus, combining these two components into a single compound does not increase the protective potential above that provided by the separate compounds. The 16 and 24 concentrations of stannous hexafluorozirconate employed in a recent clinical study may be much higher than required. Equivalent reduction of enamel solubility resulted with solutions containing approximately 120 of these levels. Author
