Abstract:

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the United States interests in the south polar regions were strictly commercial and were determined by the activities of the fishing enterprises. These enterprises hunted seals and fur-seals in the seas surrounding Antarctica and in the off shore waters of the sub-Antarctic islands. Later on, as interest in Antarctica increased in the United States, there arose the question of organizing a special expedition to explore the south polar regions. The report discusses this exploration. Author
