Recent measurements on the Schumann-Runge system of molecular oxygen indicate that the vibrational levels of the B triplet Sigmau- state above v 2 are subject to predissociation. This report describes a laboratory determination of the rate of dissociation of molecular oxygen resulting from absorption in the Schumann-Runge bands, and presents the results of calculations of the effect of this additional source of oxygen atoms on the chemistry of the lower thermosphere and the upper mesosphere. It is shown that significant increases in the atomic oxygen and ozone concentrations can result from this absorption at altitudes around 80 km. Author
