A study has been made on the possibility of identifying faulty components of a network by making tests only on external points of that network. The conclusion is made that this is possible, and that a practical method of doing this can be developed from the computer program presented as a result of this investigation. The method used is to select the voltage transfer functions of a network as the quantities on which the tests will be made. The poles and zeros of these functions are used to select a set of test frequencies. From the measurements made at these frequencies, a set of signatures is available which allow the faulty components to be identified. Author
