The importance of environmental noises which interfere with the audio output from the loudspeaker of an intercom or radio communications receiver has led to the study of sound masking and noise interference. The results are applied in the development of an automatic control system which compensates for environmental noises by maintaining the speaker output at a prescribed listening level above such interference. Such a system could be used to maintain the readability of communications in spite of a noisy environment such as on the bridge or in the engine room of a ship. Author
