Abstract:

A survey of the literature is presented relating to the occurrence of Taylor vortices in annular ducts. These are collected in graphical form and extrapolated by combining theories. Results of experiments on transition in annuli of several gap sizes are given. These include the effects of axial velocity, distance from the inlet, and radial position. Two-length effects are shown to exist the length to establish transition, and the length for the disturbance to fill the gap. Transition points are compared through use of a displacement-thickness Taylor number. It is shown that this number is affected by gap size. Curves of Taylor number versus Reynolds numbers exhibit a reverse bend suggesting transition to a different mode of flow at the large Reynolds numbers. Author
