The usual method of measuring wear of parts involves the use of radioactive isotopes and this entails some danger as well as requiring a great many recorders. A method of measuring wear is described by which a capacitance pickup is glued flush with the face of the part subjected to wear. Wear is judged by the drop in capacitance of the pickup due to progressive wear. Direct recording of the changes in capacitance yields a curve characterizing wear and permits determining completion of run-in and the start of normal operation of machine parts. Author
