Abstract:

The paper sums up the results of Soviet satellite investigations of charged particles and magnetic fields in space during the last 10 years. These are as follows 1 discovery of radiation belts around the earth 2 discovery of a zone of soft electrons beyond these belts 3 discovery of a plasma sheath extending up to 3-5 earth radii out 4 experimental confirmation of the existence of solar wind 5 determination of the form of the earths magnetosphere and detection of a neutral layer on the night side 6 confirmation of the absence of a strong lunar magnetic field 7 investigation of magnetic field and charged particles near Venus and Mars 8 detection of protons with an energy of 1 MeV filling the solar corpuscular streams in interplanetary space 9 determination of the intensity of primary cosmic rays 10 detection of helicity of magnetic lines of force in interplanetary space 11 detection of electrons in the composition of particles appearing during chromospheric flares on the Sun.
