EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF AIR AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

Experimental investigations were made of spectral absorption indexes of air at temperatures above 10,000 degrees K with the aim of determining more accurately the role of the thermal radiation at very high Mach numbers. The shock tube used could produce shock-wave velocities from 2 to 10 kmsec. A block diagram of the experimental setup is shown and its operation is described in some detail. The methods and results of earlier Soviet and foreign investigations are evaluated with the view to identifying the causes of discrepancies between the theories and experimental data which exist, at shock wave velocities above Mach 24.
