A method is presented for the estimation of the vector wavenumber spectrum and the directional wave spectrum of the sea surface elevation. The method assumes that an athwartship array of wave height sensors are mounted on a rapidly moving foil-borne hydrofoil vehicle and that simultaneous surface elevation records are obtained from each sensor. The estimated wave spectrum is expressed in terms of the encounter spectrum and the set of encounter cross-spectra obtained from these records. The method is evaluated by means of an artificial analytical example without sampling variability. It appears that a wide range of wave frequencies can be resolved quite well. The basic limitation is the length of the array with respect to the longer wave lengths in the spectrum. Author
