Abstract:

A semipopular discussion is given of new physical effects, the discovery of which was induced by the appearance of lasers. The majority of these effects pertain to the area of so-called nonlinear optics - optics of media, the properties of which can change under action of the field of radiation itself. Such changes become noticeably only at large intensities of radiation at small intensities the properties of media change insignificantly and processes occurring in them obey the laws of conventional linear optics.
