Abstract:
The freezing of bulk construction materials such as sand, gravel, cement, etc. in rolling stock and storage piles is a great problem under Soviet winter conditions. The book discusses methods of 1 preventing the freezing by drying, chemical treatment, etc 2 thawing of frozen material by chamber heating, steam injection, infra-red and HF electromagnetic heating and 3 restoration of looseness to bulk material without thawing, by vibration, hammering, pick penetration, explosive shock, etc. Both Soviet and American experience are summarized. Diagrams and photographs of equipment are presented. A 53 item bibliography is included. Author
