The nuclear magnetic resonance nmr line-shape technique was used to measure rates of inversion and carbon-metal bond exchange for organometallic compounds in solution. The dominant mechanism is found to involve, in the slow step, carbon bridging in polymeric aggregates. Studies are also reported on the calculation of chemical shifts from molecular wave functions. In qualitative work the chemistry of electrocyclic reactions of carbanions was investigated and a method was developed to generate carbon atoms in solution. Author
