Multiple theories have been formulated to explain the mechanism of action of inhalation anesthetics. The literature has been reviewed from the introduction of ether anesthesia in 1846 up to the present date. A concise table of theories has been compiled for ready reference. A discussion is given on recent theories and of evidence in their support. Two general concepts of the mechanism of action of general anesthetics are outlined. The review is of interest to anesthesiologists and all related basic science fields. Author
