A description is given of the design, operation, and application of MINOS III, an experimental adaptive-learningdigital computer complex. This complex is dedicated to the problem of reducing the time required to filter, classify, and format data directly from real-world environments into a form suitable for direct use, or application to the ADP system. Principles of design and operation of the adaptive-learning section of MINOS III are described in detail. A discussion is also presented regarding machine training by use of sample data sets, and its subsequent ability to perform as a data classifier on similar but not identical data. Experimental techniques and operational results obtained from MINOS III applications are discussed. These discussions include MINOS IIIs ability to perform on the following types of problems 1 classification of hand-printed map symbols, 2 recognition of military tanks, and 3 automatic reading of contour data from military maps.
