The nature and extent of the damage introduced into magnesium oxide crystals by surface grinding has been studied as a function of wheel type and rate of material removal. Two types of damage were observed sub-surface deformation and surface topography. Both the sub-surface damage and surface topography are discussed in terms of the stresses and temperatures existing at the wheel-workpiece interface during grinding. Author
