Abstract:

An examination has been carried out of the sources of uncertainty in the measurement of the effective case depth of surface-hardened steel by using hardness measurements at 1.0-kgf and 0.5-kgf loads. It is shown that the probability of error in the measurement of load and the length of the indentation is relatively small. In the most useful range of the method, this uncertainty is unlikely to exceed plus or minus 0.004 inch, while the overall uncertainty is unlikely to exceed plus or minus 0.012 inch.
