Abstract:
An analysis is given of data on Communist Chinas industrial investment during the period 1952-1957, presented in terms of national accounts and in U.S. dollars. In spite of the limited quantity and relatively low quality of available data, it is still possible to make a few statements with a fairly high degree of certainty. 1 The economy was heavily dependent on imports, which accounted for about 20 percent of the gross domestic investment. 2 Nearly one-quarter of the total investment consisted of additions to inventory. 3 Construction activity accounted for some two-thirds of total fixed investment, a rather high proportion considering the small volume of residential construction during the period.
