The study is based on samples of organic fouling taken from vessels navigating in the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea and in both of the seas in succession. Major aspects affecting the reproduction and propagation of various plant and animal foulers, such as water temperature, salinity, bottom and coastal types, prevailing winds and currents are discussed. The foulers are listed by species, genera and families. The effect of organic fouling on the loss of the vessels speed is exemplified by tests conducted prior to and after the removal of fouling from vessels. Recommendations in the selection and use of antifouling paints are given.
