The vacuum-ultraviolet absorption spectrum of nitric oxide gas 4 different isotopes has been photographed with the most powerful existing spectrographs. The infrared and the visible emission spectrum emanating from a discharge through rapidly streaming NO also has been recorded with very large instruments. In the vacuum ultraviolet it was photographed with a l m grating. Comprehensive rotational analyses of the many band structures observed on the plates have been carried out. The result of the investigation is the knowledge of the excited states of the NO molecule exceeding the present knowledge for any other molecule as far as completeness and theoretical understanding is concerned. Several novel features in band structures could be studied, particularly electronic interactions and extreme l uncoupling. Important molecular constants could be derived with high accuracy. Author
