Abstract:
Observations of the luminosity created by 13-gm explosions in air, O2, and N2 have been made with a time-integrated spectrograph and with a microsecond-resolution photodiode. Incomplete identification of the spectral species suggests a wide range of excitations in the three gases from low-energy forbidden O2-band radiation to ionized N2-radiation. The source of these excitations has not been proven, but the circumstantial evidence suggests that explosion particles produce the luminosity during collisions with the ambient gas. Author
