High-pressure to 80 kbar high-temperature to 2500C. synthesis work to obtain entirely novel chemical compositions and structures briefly is reviewed. Much of the work was devoted to identification and characterization of new sulfides and selenides, and determining the conditions under which these materials are formed. The crystal structure and superconducting behavior of a new high temperature polymorph of CaSi2 was investigated. Author
