Based on the known elastic stress distribution associated with a stressed stationary crack, an expression for the line energy per unit length of crack front is determined. At the stress required to propagate the crack, this expression reduced to two factors, viz. the dimension of the crack and the energy absorbed in creating new fracture surface area. This concept may be useful where line tension arguments are used to explain the interaction of a crack front with various obstacles it encounters both prior to and during fracture. Author
