Investigations on the laboratory and industrial cultivation of unicellular algae, Chlorella and Scenedesmus, for the production of bulk fodder have been carried out in the Soviet Union and abroad. Criteria for mass cultivation of algae are the culture should be capable of good growth without mixing the culture should grow without addition of carbon dioxide the culture should grow well without combined nitrogen the culture should be thermo- tolerant the separation of biomass should be carried out with simple and economic methods the culture must not be toxic the culture liquid should be utilized. For practical purposes, selected strains of algae, which would meet the criteria for cultivation, must be isolated. The nutrition physiology of these variants must be studied in mass culture before establishing mass cultivation of algae for obtaining biomass for fodder.
